3-(N-Morpholino)propanesulfonic acid (MOPS) is an N-substituted aminosulfonic acid with a morpholine ring. MOPS has buffering capacity within the pH range of 6.5-7.9. Due to its inert properties, MOPS is widely used in biological and biochemical research. It does not interact with metal ions in solution and exhibits significant metal-buffer stability, particularly with copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and cobalt (Co) ions.

MOPS buffer can maintain the pH of mammalian cell culture media. Its role also extends to maintaining pH in RNA denaturing gel electrophoresis. MOPS can alter lipid interactions, affecting membrane thickness and barrier properties. Additionally, MOPS interacts with bovine serum albumin, stabilizing the protein. Hydrogen peroxide can slowly oxidize MOPS into its N-oxide form.
