As a biological buffer, MES can be used in biochemical diagnostic kits, DNA/RNA extraction kits, and PCR diagnostic kits. It can also be a calcium soap dispersant in soaps and detergents. It is a major active ingredient in detergents. which can replace some sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate and sodium tripolyphosphate, to produce low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free detergents.
