Isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside
Isopropyl β-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) is a highly effective inducer that is not metabolized by bacteria and is therefore very stable, making it widely used in laboratories.
IPTG is commonly used in cloning experiments that induce β-galactosidase activity. It is often used in conjunction with X-Gal or Bluo-Gal for blue-white screening of recombinant bacterial colonies, which can induce the expression of the lac operon in Escherichia coli.
IPTG binds to the lacI repressor protein and alters its conformation, preventing the repression of the β-galactosidase encoding gene lacZ.
